Colin is a large advocate of patient communication and takes great pride in the way cases are presented to patients within the practice.

What will happen at my hygienist appointment? by Karen Walker

The purpose of seeing a Dental Hygienist is not only for her to professionally clean your teeth, it’s also to help YOU achieve “Optimum Oral Health” ensuring good general heath and wellbeing.

The first thing your Hygienist will do is to update your medical history by asking you what medications you are currently taking and if you’ve been ill recently. This is necessary before we undertake any treatment as it gives us an overall picture of you and your general health, which can have a huge impact on your oral health.

Your Hygienist will then use a millimeter calibrated probe to probe around your gums. At this stage she is building up a picture of the condition of your gums and will call some numbers out to the dental nurse to record on your chart. This is called a Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE) The lower the numbers the better the condition of your gums, the less bleeding on probing (BOP), the better the condition of your gums.

Depending on the results of the BPE score and the prescription from your dentist, your Hygienist will begin to formulate the best way to treat your mouth.

Hygienists are specially trained to treat all degrees of gum disease –

Gingivitis- inflammation confined to the gums

Periodontitis- the inflammation has spread to the supporting bone

The next step is to clean any soft plaque, any hardened plaque and stains from your teeth and gums. Hardened plaque is known as calculus although some people call it tartar. Hard plaque builds up as a result of the minerals in your saliva causing soft plaque to calcify. You can’t remove these hard deposits with a toothbrush. Your hygienist will use a specialist piece of equipment called an ultrasonic scaler, which vibrates these deposits off.  The ultrasonic scaler also sprays a lot of water to aid with ridding the debris; the dental nurse will expertly remove the water with a suction tube called an aspirator. Sometimes the ultrasonic scaler can be a little sensitive, your Hygienist will make sure you are as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.

The hygienist will then use specialist hand instruments to go around the whole mouth again. This is a bit like “fine tuning” as the ultrasonic scaler will have got rid of larger deposits, this method checks there is nothing left.

The next stage is to carry out a polish to ensure all extrinsic (surface stains) are removed. This is usually the bit everyone likes!

Now your mouth is clean your Hygienist will demonstrate the best way to keep it clean by showing you which toothbrush and technique to use and how to clean interdentally (in between the teeth).

Your hygienist will then discuss with you the maintenance recall programme that best suits your oral health. This is bespoke for every patient and will be re-evaluated at every appointment you have with your Hygienist and Dentist.

Please note this article is to give an insight into a BASIC Hygienist appointment for patients with good oral health. Your Dentist and Hygienist will discuss with you if you require more complex treatment to maintain optimum oral health.

It is with great regret that we have to announce that Ian will be leaving Campbell and Peace Specialist Practice on 8th February 2013.

Late last year Ian suffered an accident whilst on holiday damaging his shoulder and since then this has caused great difficulty in working clinically and has therefore caused disruption to patients at the practice due to illness related to the injury.

Ian has taken the decision that he can no longer proceed in such an uncertain manner, rearranging patients due to the damage caused to his shoulder and has decided to step aside from clinical duties at Campbell and Peace and to leave Campbell and Peace Ltd entirely.

Ian would to take this opportunity to express his gratitude to all the patients he has seen and treated over the years at Peace of Mind and Campbell and Peace and he is very proud of everything he has achieved during that time.

Ian is arranging for all his patients to be transferred into the expert care of Mr Neil Poyser, Consultant Restorative Dentist and Specialist in Periodontics who is already working at the practice and known to many of the patients. Ian feels that patients will continue to receive exceptional care at the practice both from Neil and our team of hygienists Karen and Gill and the overall clinical team at Campbell and Peace.

Colin is hugely grateful for the opportunity that he was given by Ian when he entered the practice in 2008 and hopes to continue providing an exceptional level of care and service to all the patients who attend the practice.
